50 Random Questions - and Answers!

In an effort to force myself to blog more regularly, I have been searching the web for crazy little listy things. There's all sorts of these things - the Monday Mission and the Friday five and the Two fer Tuesday and the Sunday Op Ed and the This or That Tuesday and (ahem) the Saturday Sex Quiz. So on occasion, you can now expect that I will answer random questions - call it a sort of "Get to Know Me" thang.

I found this random bunch of questions, um, somewhere online. They're quick answers. Don't know how insightful they are, but whatever.

1. Your name spelled backwards. Yoj Ittelrac. Nice!

2. Where were your parents born? Mom was born in Tazewell TN and Dad in Plymouth MA.

3. What is the last thing you downloaded onto your computer? erm... Tragically Hip live cut of "Trickle Down"

4. What's your favorite restaurant? It sort of depends on what I am in the mood for. At the moment, I am craving meat, so right about now I'd really like to go to Red Bones - but it varies.

5. Last time you swam in a pool? No clue - ages ago.

6. Have you ever been in a school play? Good Lord, yes.

7. How many kids do you want? Well, I can't have any so the point is moot. Given a choice, probably two.

8. Type of music you dislike most? I'm not a fan of ganster rap or opera.

9. Are you registered to vote? I actually don't know. I registered when I got my state ID but never got any notice of voter registration, so I really have no idea.

10. Do you have cable? Nope

11. Have you ever ridden on a moped? Yes indeedy.

12. Ever prank call anybody? Of course.

13. Ever get a parking ticket? I don't drive, so no.

14. Would you go bungee jumping or sky diving? I'm an epileptic, so either would be unwise. Having a seizure while sky diving could be really ugly, ya know?

15. Furthest place you ever traveled? Venice, Italy

16. Do you have a garden? No, I don't have a place for one. I would though, if I had a yard.

17. What's your favorite comic strip? Fox Trot

18. Do you really know all the words to your national anthem? Yes

19. Bath or Shower, morning or night? Shower in the morning - bubble baths once in a great great while for relaxation.

20. Best movie you've seen in the past month? Chicken Run

21. Favorite pizza topping? White pizza with spinach and walnuts. Really.

22. Chips or popcorn? Popcorn.

23. What color lipstick do you usually wear? I don't, usually, but when I do, bronze.

24. Have you ever smoked peanut shells? Um, no.

25. Have you ever been in a beauty pageant? Again, no.

26. Orange or Apple juice? Orange as long as there is zero pulp - otherwise apple.

27. Who was the last person you went out to dinner with and where did you dine? Rod and I went to Cinderalla's for pasta/calzones last Friday.

28. Favorite type chocolate bar? Thanks to Rod's influence, Boost bars (the British ones, not the enrgy bars from the US).

29. When was the last time you voted at the polls? 2000, when I voted in the presidental election.

30. Last time you ate a homegrown tomato? I'm not really a tomato fan.

31. Have you ever won a trophy? Yes, for a potato-sack race at my dad's company picnic when I was about ten.

32. Are you a good cook? I'm average, I think. There are things I make really well and others that you might not want to bother with. I do read the sides of boxes well, so I'm good at pre-fab meals.

33. Do you know how to pump your own gas? I don't even drive and I know how to pump gas. Does ANYONE not know this?

34. Ever order an article from an infomercial? Yes... back in college I ordered a step exercise video. I think I used it - and the step - once.

35. Sprite or 7-up? Sprite - Diet

36. Have you ever had to wear a uniform to work? I had to wear a uniform when I waitressed at a country club - and an apron thingy when I worked at a supermarket in high school.

37. Last thing you bought at a pharmacy? Erm, tampons.

38. Ever throw up in public? if I have, I was too drunk to remember it.

39. Would you prefer being a millionaire or find true love? I've got true love, so it's not a fair question... but life with money and without love still isn't fully living.

40. Do you believe in love at first sight? You know, I am not sure.

41. Ever call a 1-900 number? The National Passport Center Hotline is a 900 number. So yes.

42. Can exes be friends? Sometimes, but not always. I have three exes that are still friends. I have several more that are not.

43. Who was the last person you visited in a hospital? No idea. Most of the time, people wind up visiting me in the hospital.

44. Did you have a lot of hair when you were a baby? None. I didn't have a really full head of hair until I was three.

45. What message is on your answering machine? "Hi, this is Joy. I'm guessing you know how this works, so go to it."

46. What's your all time favorite Saturday Night Live Character? This question is way, way, WAY too hard for me. Too many choices.

47. What was the name of your first pet? Sassy

48. What is in your purse? Gum, wallet, Tangerine Altoids, two pens, lipstick, an inhaler, random receipts, a program from an improv show and an announcement for another.

49. Favorite thing to do before bedtime? Um, is sex a legitimate answer here?

50. What is one thing you are grateful for today? I'm grateful that I got a lot of work done this morning. It's let me slack off a bit this afternoon. :)

Friday Five, take one

Yes, I know I said I was trying to blog more often. I also said I am a horrible person.

So here's my first "Friday five."

1. What is your favorite scary movie?
Silence of the Lambs - I like the fact that it's not just horror, it's a psychological thriller.

2. What is your favorite Halloween treat?
As a kid it was always Reese's peanut butter cups. I can remember that every Halloween my brother and I would test whether the Reese's cups or a Hershey bar dunked in peanut butter tasted better. Jury's still out.

3. Do you dress up for Halloween? If so, describe your best Halloween costume.
Not anymore. As a kid, I had some fabulous costumes - my mom always made our costumes rather than buy those plastic things. I think that when I was three I was a ladybug - it's the first Halloween I even vaguely remember and I can remember that it was tough to walk with a sandwich-board type costume.

4. Do you enjoy going to haunted houses or other spooky events?
Eh, I can take 'em or leave 'em.

5. Will you dress up for Halloween this year?
I'm thinking no... if I'm going to, I had better come up with something soon, huh?

What's in my purse...

So, I read somewhere online today that the average woman has 25 things in her purse.

Well then, let's see if I'm extraordinary or what...

1 - Wallet. We won't count what's inside that.
2 - Book of stamps
3 - Chili's gift certificates (4) and business card of the manager - received when we had the worst service EVER a few weeks back
4 - receipts (4)
5 - T-passes (2), October and November
6 - black pen - ball point
7 - $35 that I need to remember to give to Cheryl
8 - concert stub from Monday's American Idol concert
9 - state ID
10 - cruise ship guest card from my trip to Alaska last month
11 - little black thingy that holds business cards
12 - key ring with four rings and eight keys on it - I probably only use two of those keys with any semblance of regularity
13 - access card for my company's building
14 - watch
15 - medication in a little bottle
16 - medication in inhaler form
17 - medication in blister pack form
18 - lip balm
19 - portable thingy of perfume which I always carry but rarely wear
20 - er, tampon
21 - another pen
22 - gum wrappers (no gum)
23 - another black pen - gel writer!
24 - two tissues
25 - a HUGE amount of change - $7.96 in change actually

Wow. I just feel so average now.

This or That Tuesday

This is another one of those daily blogging things that I am trying out (though lately I seem to have been able to come up with my own topics). I like this one because it's just your basic easy multiple choice, dis-or-dat thing. ( I apologize to the folks who run this thing. I cannot find the link to the site that poses these questions, only to the site where I found someone else who'd answered them. Sorry.)

1. Art or science museum?
Art... but I like anthropology museums too.
2. Play or watch sports?
Watch (and yell and curse at the athletes, not to mention umps/refs).
3. Zoo or circus?
Hands down, no questions asked, zoo.
4. Theater: film or live on stage?
Oh my gosh, live live live.
5. Rock concert or the symphony?
Rock concert.
6. Movies: see them in a theater or wait for DVD/VHS?
Ooh, good question. Lately I haven't seen much in the theater, and DVD has those nifty extras, so I'm torn.
7. Board games or computer/video games?
Lately I've been playing board games online. Fun!
8. Hobbies: crafts (art, cooking, home repair, etc) or collecting (coins, stamps, rocks, etc)?
I'm a packrat. Collecting.
9. Watch TV or read a book?
Read a book.
10. Eating out: fancy, white-tablecloth restaurant or casual dining?
Depends on my mood - and my appetite. I tend to like ethnic food and the ambience runs the gamut.

This or that Thursday

Because I am thinking about the holidays, I am going to do this week's This or That Thursday poll. For whatever reason, in these polls, I tend to choose the unlisted third option. I'm a rebel, I know.

1. Real or artificial tree? Real. Real, real, real. Fake trees tend to look like crap and don't have the happy pine smell that defines the holiday season. That being said, my sister's allergic to pine and she has the best fake tree EVER. It's full and goreous and pine-scented.

2. Real or artificial wreath? Eh, wreath, schmeath. I like swags.

3. Open gifts on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day (or do you do another holiday such as Hannukkah)? I open gifts whenever I can, as often as I can. Mostly Christmas Day, but with my family, there are several celebrations (see #10), so it could be other times as well.

4. "It's A Wonderful Life" or "Miracle on 34th Street"? I like both movies, but I really enjoy "Miracle on 34th Street" - both versions, in fact. I love the fact that they changed the ending in the second one and put a new twist on it... and, when you think of it, a slightly sacrilegious one. Is God the same as Santa? Well, under the law... sort of.

5. Outdoor decorations, or just indoors? At my own house, indoors. Stringing up lights outside is time-consuming and annoying. But I like to drive around and look for the tackiest possible house displays. Fun!

6. "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" or "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer"? Hmm. I assume this means the songs and not the Christmas specials - and if that is the case I am going for another choice. I like SO many different Christmas carols, but neither of these would even make my top ten list. I do, however, love the Rudolph television special.

7. Miniature lights or the larger ones? I like the miniature ones. My mom's a traditionalist, little white lights only, but I confess to liking colored lights as well... though it's sometimes hard to distinguish colored Christmas lights to crappy college dorm ambience lights. :)

8. Store-bought or hand-made ornaments? Both. I like store-bought ones, but anything that my nieces and nephews have made for me over the years is very special to me. Also, anything that I made as a kid has special meaning. When I was in kindergarten, I made a sad little red bell out of a pipe cleaner, a section of an egg carton, and a jingle bell inside. That goes on the tree every year.

9. TV Specials: The Grinch or Charlie Brown? I have to go with Charlie Brown, because of the crazy Peanuts dancing and the incredible transformation from twig to gorgeous tree. Fun.

10. Will you be staying at home for the holiday, or going visiting? Oh my Lord. I'm going to my brother's the Saturday before Christmas, my mom's on Christmas Day, my sister's the Sunday after Christmas, my friend Thom's on the 23rd, and I think my friend Jen's on Christmas eve. So, yeah. Visiting.

Ta-da! My views on the holidays, in a nutshell.

Waddaya call it?

Today's This or That Thursday quiz... linguists everywhere are awaiting the results of this one.

1. Kleenex or tissue? Kleenex is a brand name. Tissue is what they are. I tend to call them tissues.

2. Soda or pop (or tonic or whatever)? Soda.

3. A sandwich on a long roll: sub or hero? I'm from Rhode Island, where we call it a grinder. If forced, I'll call it a sub.

4. Glasses or spectacles? Glasses... who calls them spectacles anymore?

5. TV or television? TV

6. Movie or film? Well, see, there's movies that are movies and movies that are films. Films are, I don't know, more highbrow. Arty. Quality. Weighty. Or maybe just old. Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure? That's a movie. Roman Holiday? That's a film.

7. Sofa or couch? Both. Couches are bigger than sofas.

8. Stove or range? It's a stove unless it has a built-in grill thingy, then it's a range.

9. Remote control or clicker? Remote

10. Supermarket or grocery store? Hmm. Neither, really. I either call it "the store" or I refer to it as Shaw's, Star Market, Stop & Shop, whatever it actually is.

Friday Five

So, I don't always do the Friday Five but this week it's goooooooooood.

1. Explain why you started to journal/blog.
Rod got me started. He bought me the domain name as a present early on in our relationship and I've been blogging away ever since.

2. Do people you interact with day to day or family members know about your journal/blog? Why or why not?
Um, yes and no. Some members of my family know, others don't, others do but I wish they didn't. My mother found out about it and has been bitter ever since, despite the fact that I don't generally use this as a public forum to blast her - she seems to think it's the only reason I even have a web site at all. So, that misperception being the case, I don't think she looks at the site all that often. Some of my friends know - those I think might be interested or those who are far away and can sort of keep up on my life through it. And a handful of my co-workers know about it, but I don't know that any of them actually visit it.

3. Do you have a theme for your journal/blog?
Not really. Random thoughts, mostly. Ranting when I need to, funny stuff when I find stuff I want to share. Occasional philosophizing. A little of everything, really... but no theme over all.

4. What direction would you like to have your journal/blog go in over the next year?
I'd like to be more faithful to it. I've been notably bad about it lately, but that's because work's been crazy and wedding planning has been preoccupying my mind an awful lot... so rather than blog I've been wandering wedding websites and message boards and seking the perfect gown and cake and invitation and on and on, ad infinitum. Well, I suppose not literally ad infinitum, because I've just about stopped. I'm still reading the Wedding Channel message boards because I love the little community that they've got going there, but other than that, I've calmed down a bit. And my wedding bloggery is happening over at Rod's and my wedding site so I've got stuff to write there and here.

5. Pimp five of your favorite journals/blogs.
Oh, the choices! I suppose I should give props to Rod, but since I mentioned him in that first question, I'm going to skip him now. Ha! It's like I get six for the price of five! I don't have time to blogjump every day, but these are always the first ones I tend to check when I've got some reading time... and I would put some sort of fabulous description of each, but essentially, it would just say Meegan's thoughts... Statia's rants... Mikey's random horniness... or some such boring thing, so just go check'em out yourself.

  • Pizza Dreaming (Er, that would be Statia's rants.)
  • Not So Simple (Ahem. Meegan's thoughts.)
  • Electric Bugaloo (Mikey's horniness and other entertaining things.)
  • Annessa.Net (This is a new read for me that I just love. It's Annessa's, um, thoughts, and, erm, stuff like that. See, boring description. Good blog.)
  • Sassypants (Sarah was one of the first visitors to my site so she has a special place in my heart - and she's funny. Go visit.)

I would give honorable mentions but I'm tired. Maybe I'll do a whole linky thing in some other entry - or maybe at some point soon I will update my blogroll so that I have a whole "cool blogs to read" section. Or maybe I will remain the lazy ass that I am and not bother.

We'll see.

The ME network

That last entry reminded me that I haven't yet done the random act of journaling for February. Here's the challenge this time around:

If you could create your own cable network, what shows, current, cancelled, or vintage, would you feature on your lineup?

The difficulty for me here is knowing that I only have 168 hours in a week to play with.

I am really attacking this assignment with gusto. So here's what I want, to make my viewing life complete - REALLY complete. In no particular order...

A. A is for Anger.

So, I have to do an AlphaBytes entry for the letter A, and one of the words is Anger, and I found this Seven Deadly Sins quiz on one of the blogs I lurk, and it was like, woohoo, serendipity, and since I like me some quizzes, here I go.

ANGER
1. With whom did you last get angry? Myself, actually... but outside of me, a co-worker.
2. What is your weapon of choice? Silent rage, then venting to others.
3. Would you hit a member of the opposite sex? Depending on circumstance, yes.
4. How about of the same sex? Yes again, depending on circumstance. I used to hit people with some regularity but grew out of that. Boy, that doesn't make me sound too good, but hey, that's why they call 'em sins, right? I guess I just didn't know how to handle my anger outside of lashing out physically.
5. Who was the last person who got really angry at you? I'm guessing my mother.
6. There apparently is no #6.
7. Do you keep grudges, or can you let them go easily? It depends on the situation. I think forgiveness is a hard thing to master.

Quizzy thingy

I'm in a blogging mood today... and so I am going to start by taking a This-or-that quiz that is NOT related to the alphabetical thing (though I'll get back to that in a few minutes, because I'm way behind, and I'm crap). First...

1. Poetry or prose? Prose.
2. Funky modern art or the older, "classic" variety? Saying both is cheating, so I am going to say classic art because some of the modern art I've seen just seems to be saying, "Look!! Look at me!! I'm funky and new and different and I'm rocking your wordl!!!"
3. Sculptures or paintings? See, now I'm torn. I like modern sculpture, but classic paintings. I guess I'm saying I just like art.
4. Theatre: exuberant musical or serious drama? Oh, now, these questions are totally unfair. Depends on my mood, really, but I guess more often than not, I tend to be a musical gal.
5. Ballet or modern dance? I'm gonna go with modern dance but I'm torn on this one too.
6. Movies: major studio or indie? Let's be honest, in this day and age, it's sometimes tough to tell the difference. I'm going with major studio, I suppose, even though it makes me feel somehow bad for not supporting independent film.
7. Authors: Shakespeare or Dr. Seuss? Again, unfair! I love both... and it's a mood thing, but I'm going with Shakespeare, I guess. But not the histories!
8. TV: PBS or A&E? These questions are IMPOSSIBLE!! Argh!! PBS!
9. Music: Beethoven or Beatles? Finally, one I know the answer to!!
Beatles. Beatles Beatles Beatles.

10. Thought-provoking question of the week: You are a contributing member of your favorite art museum, and visit on a regular basis. They announce a new, temporary special exhibit by an artist surrounded by controversy...this person's work and/or political views offend you. Do you stop supporting the museum, or just stay away during the time the exhibit is there? See, now, the thought-provoking question is easy. You just don't go while it's there - OR! You take the opportunity to see what you're missing, what others see in the artist that you may not have appreciated until now, and you go check out the exhibit. Maybe you'll learn something!

Gigantor quiz

Rather than dwell on my sad inability to complete the simplest of tasks, such as creating an entry for each letter of the alphabet during the month of March, I am simply going to take a big quiz that I found in my friend Josh's journal.

On a side note, I think I have a pretty freakin' good excuse - several, in fact - in that I am packing to move, planning a wedding, attempting to actually do WORK at work, and having shows or rehearsals or general improv activities at least three days a week. So, I'll do the second half of the alphabet in April.

Probably.

In the meantime, here's the quiz... (Side note: I have removed some questions which appeared to be aimed at your average 15-year-old. Then again, I've left some in. Really, there's no rhyme or reason to it. )

Word Association

Came across these random things while blogjumping. Thought I'd make a post out of 'em, just because. I know nobody actually cares about such things but they sort of entertain me.

I say... and you think....
1. Miss America:: crown
2. Cherubs:: wings
3. Shark Week:: chum
4. Sunflowers:: seeds
5. Sorority:: drinking
6. Grilled chicken:: caesar salad
7. 100:: years
8. Tickle monster:: most effective way to upset Rod
9. Veronica:: Elvis Costello
10. Slurpee:: 7-11

1. What food could you eat practically every day? Risotto!
2. What is your least favorite food? Mushrooms, I think. Asparagus isn't particularly high on my list either.
3. How often do you eat out? Fairly frequently - once every other week for diiners, plus lunches at work.
4. What does the inside of your refrigerator look like (i.e., well stocked with fresh food, lots of left-overs that have been there for a while or looks like Mother Hubbard's cupboard)? A fair amount of leftovers, plus Slimfast and cheese. Lots of cheese.
5. Is there a combination of food you like that other people may think is gross? I've talked about this before, but I think tuna fish and chow mein noodles are fabulous together. I also like Reese's pieces with pretzels.

5 Questions...

So, there is this trend in the blog community here, there, and everywhere, of random questions being asked and the blogger providing answers. This latest ocncept question thingie is really interesting, because the questions are never the same... so here are the answers to the five questions that artricia has given me.

Here's how this thing works:
THE RULES
1 - If you want to be interviewed, leave a comment.
2 - I will respond; I'll ask you five questions.
3 - You'll update your journal with my five questions, and your five answers.
4 - You'll include this explanation.
5 - You'll ask other people five questions when they want to be interviewed.

1. Who is your favorite playwrite? (Shakespeare is barred as an answer)
- This question is tough. Really tough. (And by the way, it's playwright, and you should be ashamed. I am The Spelling Police.) I'm going to go with Lorraine Hansberry because I did my senior thesis on her, because she died before her time and is thus not particularly well -known, and because she's feckin' brilliant.

2. How many items do you still own that say "Joy" on them? Give your favorite three examples.
- Good lord, I have no idea how many I still have. Dozens. My mom gives me an ornament every Christmas with my name on it, and usually tries to squeez in a few other gifts here and there that are joy-riddled:

My favorites... I have a small square pillow that doesn't say Joy in English, but in Hebrew - or so my mother claims, which probably means it's not true at all. Doesn't really look Hebrew, but it's sort of cool that it (theoretically) says Joy without looking like it does.
Second Joy thing: Actually, this is six separate Joy things, and they're a recent acquisition. For Christmas this year, Mom got me six potholders with my name on them. When I would ever need to hold six pots at a time, I don't know, but these are just really handy little potholders. They're smaller than regular ones and are perfect for holding a bowl you've just taken out of the microwave or something of that sort. An useful Joy thing! Astounding!
Third: This would be a controversial choice if my mother read this, but I am going to go with this hard plastic bucket-bag thing that my former roommate, Tracey, got me. She painted my name on the side. I use it as a catch-all for all things hair-related, so it's both handy and pretty. And from Tracey. Don't tell my mom.

3. Your extended family has some interesting names. Which is your favorite (it need not be a name you would ever give someone). Which is the most outrageous?
- My paternal grandfather was named Romeo Waldo Emilio Carletti. (The Waldo is pronounced Ubaldo.) I love that. It's just a name that flows. And I love my mother-in-law's name, Mirren, because it's unusual and because it seems to combine the elements that you want in a women's name: it's somehow quietly gentle and feminine (whough not overtly so), and at the same time, quite strong. As for the most outrageous, well, there's my great aunt Zula Mae Large, but I think that sort of pales in comparison to the great-uncle trio of Costal, Overtt, and Vandell Large.

4. Are you still accident prone? Or am I just a jinx?
- I still trip here and there, and stumble a bit, but I haven't sprained an ankle in a year or so, and I haven't had a piece of lung removed in nearly ten years. So, maybe it is you, or maybe it's Rochester. Last time you were here, I didn't hurt myself, did I? If I did, it must have been a head wound, because I don't remember it.

5. Which story about yourself do you most want to narrate to your future grandchildren?
- Interesting. If I'm telling random stories to people now, it wouldn't really be this, but I would want to tell my grandchildren about how Rod proposed to me, in the hallway between the bedroom and the living room in his apartment, where there was a box of computer parts next to me and booksstacked next to those, and a pile of laundry three feet away, and yet it was still the most romantic moment of my life. The world isn't made magic by the things you have, the place you are, the neatness of your room - it's about the people you're with.

That's all! Comment if you want some questions from me.

Five more questions

Josh asked me five more questions...

1 - What is your favorite theatrical experience? Not necessarially a show, but it could be.
Interesting question. I think my favorite moments onstage come in improv, when all of a sudden you realize, this is good. And there's a chemistry and a magic and a knowledge that you are completely in tune with your scene partner and doing something amazing. And you just remember those moments forever. It's always hard to reiterate what happened in an improv scene that made it so good, but trust me. It's good.

2 - You've recently gotten married. What is the best part of marriage? What is the worst?
The best part of marriage is knowing that at the end of the day, I always have Rod to go home to. There's a hug waiting for me, and an ear to vent to, and a support system. What's wonderful is that every day, I fall in love with Rod a little more.
The worst part of marriage is that while I am a very messy person, Rod is among the messiest people on the planet. Thus our house is a shambles most of the time. Sometimes you just want to be somewhere that has some order to it, and neither of us is really good with keeping things in order.

3 - What would you considered your highest-ranking geek-cred?
I got five varsity letters in chess in high school, including being the captain during my senior year.

4 - You are a very politically minded individual. What would your consider the biggest problem with the current political process? (Not the people involved, ala "the president" "the congress" "the little ladies who work the tables at voting centers", but in the actual process of politics/elections/laws?)
I'm going to take this question and answer it in a whole separate post, because I'm all sorts of miffed today.

5 - Favorites:
(you said favorite, not best, so that's what I'm going with)
- movie, comedy - The Princess Bride
- movie, tear-jerker - Return to Me (Really, I kind of can't think of anything, but this works.)
- movie, drama - American History X
- movie, other - The Breakfast Club
- book, comedy - The Socratic Method (Michael Levin) - It's out of print, but it's funny.
- book, tear-jerker - A Prayer for Owen Meaney (John Irving)
- book, historical - historical? erm, I don't read a lot of histories, but I have to go with either The Source (James Michener) or Guns of the South (Harry Turtledove). THe latter of those is "alternative history" - which posits "what if X had happened; how would that have changed things?"
